Frequently Asked Questions
About IVDD
What is IVDD?
Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD) is a spinal condition that affects the discs between the vertebrae. In dachshunds, the discs can harden and rupture, putting pressure on the spinal cord. It is one of the most common health issues in the breed due to their long backs and short legs.
How do I know if my dachshund has IVDD?
Common signs include reluctance to move, crying out in pain, a hunched back, weakness or paralysis in the hind legs, and loss of bladder or bowel control. If you notice any of these symptoms, contact your vet immediately.
Is IVDD curable?
IVDD can be managed and many dogs recover well with the right treatment, which may include rest, medication, physiotherapy, or surgery depending on the severity. Early intervention is key.
Are all dachshunds at risk of IVDD?
Yes — dachshunds are one of the breeds most predisposed to IVDD due to a genetic condition called chondrodystrophy, which affects the composition of their spinal discs. Around 1 in 4 dachshunds will be affected at some point in their lives.
